Two-cylinder experts needed

Okay, all you two cylinder, number-series experts, here is a question for you: I am sourcing parts to rebuild the power steering pedestal on my 70 LP, narrow front, and I went to the dealer yesterday to start ordering parts. Problem is, when I tried to order the "steering vane packing" shown on the exploded view, the parts guy looks up what is supposed to be that part, which is R 1697 R, and instead of coming up as listed, it comes up as an eye-bolt. If you put in the number for Steering Vane, which is shown as F 1696 R, it doesn't give you anything at all. So what gives, how do you order the steering vane packing for an old John Deere 70 Power Steering pedestal? I'm all ears, thanks, Hugh

Go to the 730 book and order a complete seal kit under 1 part number.
You will also need to order a separate seal for the sleeve where the steering shaft hooks to.

INTERESTING... that"s a typo in the 70 parts catalogs (313 and 445), but correct in the 720 PC"s??? WEIRD!

I don't know how it has never been corrected in the 70 catalogs, but thanks, Blksmok, for the correct number, I called the dealer and they said, yes, that gives the right part. Now I can get on with my rebuild! Thanks, Mike M, for the tip about using the 730 book to order what I'll need under one part number plus the one additional part you mentioned, I can now proceed with confidence. Hugh

Last time I checked, the kit was NLA, which is a pity because it was great for a P/S rebuild. I just checked again and still NLA.
I guess it's back to individual parts.

I have not done one in a long time. I guess if you can still get them separate feel blessed you can still buy parts for something over 50 years old.
I'm betting the kits didn't sell well partially due to no one knowing about them because they were hardly in any of the parts books.

Hugh, Those seals can be tricky to install as the edges of the vane are sharp. I use a putty knife to stretch them on. Make sure the bottom is going in square before you stretch or it will cut the seal .

A putty knife might cut the seals !

I soak them in HOT water to help soften them up and then use dish soap to lube them and CAREFULLY use a little pocket screwdriver that is worn out and all rounded edges to help persuade them on.

I can see your point, plus I don't have as much strength in my hands/arms as I did when I was a young buck...that all sounds good to me. Thanks.
