diference between L and LA

Easiest way is that an L has 22 inch steel center rear wheels while an LA has 24 inch cast center wheels.
If you get the head off an L has a 3 1/4 bore and an LA has a 3 1/2 inch.
Frame tubes are also thicker or solid on an LA.

Thanks it has 24 inch tires. Any way to find year made? number stamped on engine over mag is 66842. if that meens anything. john deere eng?? can tag be gotten??

There doesn't seem to be any records that cross reference engine numbers with tractor serial numbers so the answer to the first part is "no".
Steiner sells reproduction tags for them. You could have it installed with no serial number or have it stamped "unknown".

Post a picture of it that would help! Also 24 inch rears on a LA if they have not been changed?? A john Deere LA has a John Deere motor part # L-4210-T on the block also some LA tranny are stamed LA on the top flangeleft of center!

Golfcartman,
It is common knowledge that the first LA's had tube frame sidemembers with exta thick walls, the first solid frame sidmembers may have started at serial number 1681.Hope this helps.

When was the serial number break for the update to the brake bands ?
Mine has the solid frame and still had the old style brake bands.
I met a fellow with one of those heavy wall frame ones and he still had a serial number tag on his but I sure don't remember what it was. That's the first and only time I have seen one around my area. If I had not of seen it I would of not believed they existed.

I ordered a mag from Marks mag in conn. As soon as I gave Mrs. Mark. the mag no, she said i was working on an LA. A very knowlegable lady, and pleasant to deal with. FOI.

Mike M,
I did some more research today and could not fine anything on the serial number break for the brake bands you are talking about. But I did discover that it is believed that a very small number of LA's where put together with tube-steel frame members that had the same wall size as the modle L's. (interesting) I'll be doing more research.

My LA is a 1941 and has solid tube frame and had the old L style brake bands as well. I switched them over to the new style when I had the final drives apart.

Whats your serial number or is your tag gone too.
I have also seen two different style of hoods. One is like gas welded together with no seams and the other is spot welded together with overlapped seams.
