John Deere 40 Clutch

Been reading other posts for a long time but this is my first. I'm working on my uncles JD 40. It hasn't been used for a couple of years and the clutch is stuck. I tied the clutch pedal down and tried jacking up one wheel and rocking it in gear but can't brake it loose. Any other ideas before I split it? What might cause this and how can I keep it from happening again?
Thanks for any help.

Moisture is what causes them to stick, if it's not going to be used for a long period of time, tie the petal down. If you can get it started in gear, drive it around holding the petal down, and ride the brakes, it might break loose.

If you have a plow or disk or other equipment that'll put a load on her that you can hook up lifted, hook it up and pull start the thing and put her to work, after you're up to operating temperature crank her open and depress the clutch and let her work with the clutch pushed in. Idea is to try to get a load on the tractor with the clutch pushed in so the only thing holding the clutch and transmitting power is the rust bond in the clutch.

Read up in the 8 n archives.

Get it going in high, hang on and jamb on only one brake works wonders.

With the clutch stuck like that, its kinda hard to pull start one and get the chain unhooked before you run into the pulling tractor. Best to push start it, or let it roll down a hill.

Guess I wasn't thinking- sorry, push start, roll start or even the old start it in gear while apologizing to the starter Gods that you're doing it. Get it started put it to work and try using the draft to free up the clutch. Or if you have no sense of adventure split it.
