Thanks John and Bob. Worked on the regulator. today and got it down to 14.4 to 14.6 What do you guys think is that good. John first thing I did yesterday was run some 400 sand paper and then some croucus cloth thru the contacts. Still had 16.4. This has all been checked with a good fluke meter. Thanks Don

While that 14.6 is a bit higher then I saw on many old Deeres (sounds more like an alternator lol), its workable PROVIDED it doesnt stay at 14+ volts on a good battery once its fully charged. Just keep an eye on it because if it charges at that rate for hours on end the battery could outgas and/or boil over. You must have a darn good genny so if the VR doesnt cause overcharge or theres another reason for extended high charge rates she may be okay??

Hope Bob weighs in also

Dang it, John, he done GOOD! And the battery will appreciate what he's done. BAD thing is, it's tough to be one of the few old codgers that have ANY idea of how this stuff works!

I brought up the question the other day, as to how many folks in a tri-county area are capable of successfully installing a carburetor kit. There AIN'T many left around here who even know what a carburetor IS!

I agree he done GOOD I recall trying to bend metal tabs to change air gaps or spring tension and things got WORSE lol Yep installing a carb kit or points and condenser or genny brushes and knowing even how they work is getting to be a thing of the past, but old codgers can still walk the walk n talk the talk as shown here each day on the forums. I'm also very good at 50's n 60's name that tune and what good does that do me lol
