H flywheel removal or adjustment for crankshaft end play

There isn't much that scares me more on these two cylinders than removing the flywheel. That being said I have never done it, maybe it's not that difficult but I've heard some horror stories about flywheels coming loose so I have chosen to stay away from them. This evening I was out in the shop looking over the H to see if there is anything else I should do before I start reassembling the engine. For what reason I have no idea I got the notion to check the flywheel end play, my manual shows 0.005-0.010, my end play is 0.023. According to the manual I need to slide flywheel in to obtain proper clearances. Can I just loosen the nuts and slide it in or do I need to completely remove it and clean the shaft first? After that how tight do I tighten the nuts again so it doesn't come loose but not enough to break the flywheel?

I just loosen the bolts and bump the flywheel with a rubber mallet. That draws the crank thru same as hitting the end of a sledge hammer etc against the floor to draw the hammer onto the handle. You could also use a block of wood and a big hammer if no rubber mallet.
I have the old flywheel wrench and just go by feel when tightening. Have never had one get loose or break. Maybe I'm not strong enough??

When I set the end play on mine I just pulled the top cover off
used a small pry bar on clutch side to push crank over easily
not prying hard on it and slid flywheel up tight then tapped it
back a little watching the end of the shaft where it and flywheel
meet and watched how far it moved.

The H has notches in the flywheel and a groove in the crank
when you loosen the bolts(best done with special
wrench)you can pull it on farther with pry bars in that
notch.Tighten as tight as you can with factory wrench.

Ted Klee in MI has had them for sale on here. Also a socket w/universal should work.
