John Deere A vs. G. differences

For those in the know. whats the big differences in the John Deere A vs. G .. horsepower specs and all other specs seem almost identical, and several stories I've read seem to claim that the A does just as good as G's tractor pulling. but anyway was just sorta wanting a history lesson. thanks. for any comment.s

Late A and G for comparison. G was all fuel only with ultra low compression , Late A had in gas had higher comp and about the same hp because of it. A was 321 ci and G was 413ci. Get the comp. ratio up on the G and it will come alive with good gas. G is built heavier and that's why pullers want A and stroke the A and get more power yet. Just can't get the G into the lighter classes.

Tractor data.com will give you most of the specs. Engine size on a stock late A is about 321ci and a G is around 412 so there is a big difference rite there. There is about a 5-10 horsepower difference between them as well. But a lot of that can be changed with a good carb, manifold, and proper tuning of the engine. Its all in how you want it to run. Do you want it to lug down a lot?

No sir, not looking to lug it down, just curious to the difference. what is considered a "late" model A.. 1950 and newer for the higher compression??

50 51 52 that is the latest model A produced so that would be a late model A. Your looking at about 4.45-4.75 compression on an all-fuel and 5.60:1 on a gas model A not a big difference. Most aftermarket pistons are already made to give higher compression.

G is a Horse, A is a Lighter horse.

Once nice thing about a G if you run out
of fuel with a G, you won't hafta walk back
as far to your fuel tank to carry more fuel
to the tractor. A Model A will lead to alot
longer walk.

All of what these guys said. Then there is the sound. My A and my G both have mufflers but you can hear those extra cubic inches in the G. It's kinda hard to explain. Like bass from a stereo I guess. I can hear the exhaust pulses from the A, but I can feel the exhaust pulses from the G.

WE USED TO RUN BOTH A LATE A AND A G WITH 4 ROW FRONT MOUNT CULTIVATORS WE RAN IN 5TH GEAR IF THE CORN WAS BIG ENOUGH,,,,WE COULD EASILY PUT 50 GALLONS OF GAS THRU THE G IN A LONG DAY THE A USED ABOUT HALF AS MUCH AND WE GOT JUST AS MUCH DONE WITH EITHER TRACTOR. WE QUIT USING THE G AND USED A 60 THE POWER STEERING WAS NICE AND THE FUEL USEAGE WAS GOOD.

Thanks for the info.. yeh we have about a nice restored 1950 A.. so its a parade/drive around the property tractor lol. I was just curious thanks
