Steering on John Deere M t

Well, if you have the jam nut as tight as it will go the steering pins might be shot and won't hold tight against the worm gear. Also the bearing races for the worm gear might be bad. My father rebuilt ours and we got away with just replacing the races and welding in new pins and it seems to be like new.

The vertical portion of the steering shaft up front of the radiator inside the cast pedestal has a splined joint that is known for wearing.

Thank's guy's I will certainly check out each suggestion. The worm gear bearings had a dry sound while turning in one spot. After some checking I saw in the manual where 90 wt oil is to be used in the box. Over the years someone fixed a zerk fitting in place of the plug,as a result the bearings were not getting oil. Now after correcting with oil a baby could steer it, but my wheels are wobbly when moving.
