800/801 hitch

As applied to the letter series tractors A, B, or G. vs the 50, 60, 70...etc What was the model of the hitch? Just curious as I am on the hunt for a manual for correct usage and set up. I found one on ebay for an 801 that said it was for a 50 on up.

Are they the same? 800/801?

Everything I"ve ever read is that series 800 or 801 3 point hitches are not recommended for letter series John Deere tractors due to potential instability of the front end of the tractor. The book on operation, care and repair by John Deere does not have any pictures of letter series tractors with an 800 series hitch; Yakima type hitch only.
However the 1955 27th edition features number series JD"s with the 800 3 point hitch.
My JD 70 had a crank adjust handle at the top on the right side lift link, which was thought to be an 800 hitch, the 801 had a different adjust method for the links.

There are three versions of the 800 hitch, 800, 800a, and 801. The 800 has the large adjusting crank on the right side. That crank was replaced on the 800a with a short lever on each arm for adjustment. The 801 has the torsion arms to transfer weight to the rear axels. Over the years what you usually find is a mixture of the three.

The 800 3pt hitch was not designed for the letter series although many use them without problems as I have.

Deere did not reccommend the 800 series hitch for use on the A and B. However, Deere said it was OK to use on a G, because the front end was heavy enough. The G never went to the lighter pressed steel frame.

The 800 series hitches were introduced in 1953 for the 50,60&70 models. The 800 was produced '53 to '55. The 800A was produced for a short time in '55 and the 801 was produced from '55 on until the 520/620/720 models came out.

Go to jdparts.com and look at parts catalog #397. There are pictures of all three hitches. The 800 series are all a little bit different but they will all work on A,B,G,50,60,or 70 tractors. I have a '52A that I bought from the original owner and it has a 800 hitch with an 813 integral 3-14" plow.

That's some good information guys! Thanks, I learned a lot!

I plan on putting a wide front end on this tractor, a side effect will be more front weight.

I also have a Farmall M with a Saginaw hitch on it. Even with a wide front it'll get light in the front with some implements.

Where did the number series tractors pick up any weight that would counteract the hitch, or were there front weights that were recommended?

I have two different styles on my tractors.

These will also fit the 70. The ones that fit the 50 are smaller and a different part number and only fit the 50.

I have two of this style on my 70D's and some will say that is not correct but they are listed in the parts manual for the 70D.
