Does anyone know if the late A ,after 488000 , uses push rod sleeves? I see them listed for the early A but not the late.

My book says the sleevs were used up to 487999.
Does not show any in the later parts lists.

Well I guess I'll be looking for a blown gasket, cracked block or head. Got a lot of water in the crankcase.

When I replace the head gasket should I soak it in oil like the manual says or is that just for the original type gasket?
Thanks for the info.

Look VERY close at the upper inside of the cylinder wall from about the top of the ring travel out. I've seen several split inside there and hard to see as it opens up when the stud nuts are torqued down. But this usually goes into the cylinders first.

I haven't pulled the head yet, I just know when I removed oil plug about two gallons of water came out.
