4030 diesel timing pin hole

Replacing the Injection Pump on brother-in-laws 4030. The Original one failed @ 13,000 hours. Of course it was 20 below outside. Trying to find the hole for the TDC pin. This a very early 4030, under 4000. According to JDparts.com the pin hole is just under the hole for the Flywheel Turning Tool. Checked his tractor, and cannot find a timing pin hole. Is there an alternate method of finding TDC on this tractor. Thanks Steve.

Timing pin hole should be where plug(parts key #14) is located. There were no serial number breaks for the flywheel housing so all tractors should be similar to parts photo.

remove the timing window and rotate the engine till the marks line up is another way of doing it...

That would be plan B. I was not sure if that would be accurate enough. Have replaced several injection pumps on John Deere's over the years, and this is the first one I have not been able to set at TDC.

I know its a gasser but the one I have torn down right now did not have a pin hole in the housing. Does have timing mark on crankshaft pulley I know this doesnt help you. This tractor is early (73) and I would wonder at Deere building the rear plate different for diesel or gas

I'm kinda with you on that Tech7,,,it may not have a timing hole,, I always use the pump timing marks when I'm just doing a pump, and the cam marks when I'm doing an O/H....

Lined up the marks in the window on the injection pump. Found a mark on front pulley, that lined up with a mark on front cover behind pulley. Initially the mark was buried under a layer of dirt. Probably the same mark used to time a gas engine. Thanks for all the replies. Steve.

You did the right thing by finding the marks "before" you pulled the pump,,saved your self a lot of grief....
