4020 Pencil Injection Nozzles-Suggestions

I"m preparing to do some major work on my 4020 diesel (1967) in the transmission department, but also have a fuel smoking issue at speeds between slow idle and about 1500 rpm. Above 1500 rpm to WOT the exhaust runs clear like a normal engine should.

After talking to some other locals about this it"s suggested that the injectors are the likely issue. The pump was reworked about 1000 hrs ago but the injectors haven"t been replaced since probably the early 90"s or perhaps 5-7K hrs ago.

I"ve priced new from JD which run $109 each. Their reman injectors are $73.28 with exchange.

I"ve seen other after market pencil injectors in the $40 range.

I"d like to know what others think about these lesser expensive injection nozzles versus the JD new and JD reman.

This particular 4020 will see light work with a loader and perhaps pull a moldboard plow once a year and a rotary cutter probably twice a year on 10 acres.

Tyler, Go to you pump repair station and buy 6 new injectors for a little more than what remans cost at JD.

Whatever you do take the new injecters and have them checked before installing. The pop off pressure should be close on all of them when set correctly. You would be suprised how often a set of new injecters need readjusting.I bought the last USA made Staydine (sp?) injecters from my dealer about a year ago,now they are made in China.Deere does not build them so you maybe getting the same product from several places.

I bought a set from china, they tested OK, but the welds cracked on about half of them after 1-2 years.

Until somebody actually can state the technology involved - I do no believe there is a cost-effective method to rebuilt a pencil injector.
To do so the seats would have to be reground and narrowed to the original size. All the pencil injectors I've seen first-hand sold as "rebuilt" were just cleaned-up used injectors that did not have the service life new ones. But I am not always up to date on the latest techs. Lavoy says he sells pencil injectors that truly ARE rebuilt so maybe he'll chime in.

I put a set of brand-new Chinese pencil injectors in my Deere 300B maybe 5 years ago at $38 each. They've been fine. I also put a set in my Case 580CK maybe 8 years ago and they also have been fine. I also put a set in my neighbor's Deere 4000 a few years ago with zero issues.

In regard to checking and setting the "pop" pressure. Keep in mind that pressures for new injectors are different then for used injectors. Do not try to set used injectors at "new" specs.
