my question is since the b we got is a mag tractor what all has to be changed to convert to 12 volt. can the generator be changed to charge 12 volt?
thanks

Really, about all you would need to do is put the 12V batter in place and change to 12 volt light bulbs (after you decide what generator or Alternator you will use).

That decision will determine if the system will remain positive ground or neg. ground.

12V is NOT necessary on a JD "B" and if you do want 12V I would recommend reducing the battery and ground cable size to reduce the amperage available to the starter.
12V will spin that poor starter super fast..

12v battery
12v generator or convert old 6v generator
12v regulator
12v bulbs if it has lights
polarize generator before first startup

If changed to Negative ground switch wires at ammeter

I have used a 6 volt genny to charge a 12 volt battery simply by changing to a 12 volt Voltage Regulator HOWEVER before anyone has a calf, I'm NOT saying its proper or engineering correct or it charges at any high rate,, Im ONLY saying it can work........... Its best to have a genny shop change out the fields and do it right or just go get a 12 volt genny and 12 volt VR or else go the alternator route and change over to neg ground.

The 6 volt starter can still be used although it can be a bit tough on starter drives/gears. Best NOT to use a big heavy 12 volt battery, a lighter duty is less harsh on the starter drive.

If you change polarity the ammeter leads need swapped so it dont read bass ackwards, but if you stay with a genny Id stay at the original Pos ground

The starter used on the late B is the exact same starer motor used on the 50 which was 12 Volts. It works fine. Mine has been on 12 Volts for at least 15 years with no issues.

A delco alternator with integral regulator fits right up, why mess around with a generator and regulator.
