I'am getting ready to put the head back on my "H" If I read the parts book right you only install three lead washers (the three center studs)and nothing on the 4 outside studs.I would think I would need to put at least a flat washer on the out side studs. What would you do?

Why would you not put lead washers on all head bolts? The reason for the washer is to keep from gaulling the nut when torqued. Put them on all head bolts.

The washers were to seal so they were only used where oil contacted.
I've seen this debated before but was your head galled?
I would use them only where originally used.
I know other models used them on every bolt.

Blaine, I believe Deere did put them on all head studs. If you're looking at the latest parts book (PC-304), it does state that two B369R lead washers are to be used. However, I believe that's a mis-print. An earlier parts book (Repair parts 54-R) states six of the B369R lead washers are to be used on the six 9/16" studs. And all of the parts books ever published by Deere for the model "H" show that you are to use a 264R lead washer on the 3/4" diameter Oil Lead Stud that is in the bottom center of the head - and that's inside the valve cover along with the other four smaller studs. So it seems logical that Deere intended the lead washers to be used on all the head studs.

I agree with James Borders that the purpose of the lead washers is to prevent galling. After all, the center Oil Lead Stud is exposed to oil at both ends; in the head as well as the crankcase. So why attempt to seal that stud since oil could seep forward from the crankcase anyway?

No,the head was not galled. And like you said, some where used on every bolt.I have put heads on my "50" and 530.The parts book showed to put lead washers on all studs. I guess I was surprised that they where not used on the four outside studs on the "H"

Dan,
I do have parts book (PC-304)--I'm going to get four more lead washers. Thanks for the heads up on the mis-print.And thanks to every body else that helped.

Perhaps differences in torques or compressions.
I am picky and would notice things on an H that was not correct. Maybe too picky?
Those extra washers would show. Besides there are only three in a gasket set.
I am working on eight H's and spend considerable time on correctness, such as spending too much on an old seat when new ones are cheaper.
