Putting together a pump from a 50 JD. The seal between the drive gear and the pump gears was in with the lip facing towards the drive gear. Don"t seem right since there would be all the oil and maybe pressure on the pump gear side. What is the right way? IT manual don"t say anything about it. The JD manual say? Thanks

IMHO, original seal #AR613R was a WIDE double-lipped seal. Replacement, #AF2167R is a NARROW (.256") seal and you would use TWO, installed back-to-back, with the lips each facing OUTWARD.

That's the case with the power steering pumps, etc..

Bob,
On the original double-lipped seals didn't one lip keep oil in the pump and the other lip keep the pump from sucking in air?

If that's the case, when using 2 single-lip seals shouldn't the lip of the inner seal face the pump side and the lip of the outer seal face away from the pump?

I believe that's the way the lips on the original double-lipped seals were made... the lips and garter springs faced outwards.

Installing the new ones that way allows for a little grease to be packed between the lips for startup lube and works just fine.
