PTO shaft to mower stuck on tractor

I have a 1998 5410 John Deere with a 1018 John Deere mower. The mower's pto shaft is stuck on the tractor's shaft and won't come off.

The original twist release broke. So then I had to hold down the pin to uncouple the PTO shaft from the tractor. Then the mower pto stuck on the tractor's shaft and won't come off, at that time I broke the spring on the pin and remove the pin thinking that would release the shaft. The pto will slide back and forth about 1/4" but comes to a hard stop when moved forward or backwards.

Does anyone have an idea what I need to do to remove the pto shaft??

"Twist release" would imply a system where 3 captive steel balls retain the yoke. Yet, you have a pin. I am confused.

If your yoke is similar to the one in parts schematic I would GUESS one needs to remove spring(parts key#2) to get pin to release.

I have had same problem with my jd8100 and Landpride mower. Many times manufacturers do not have grease fitting on the telescoping drive shaft. Then when you turn, it binds and puts undue force on the retaining pin and this marrs the pto splines. You may have no choice but to remove it by torch. I learned the hard way to separate the telescoping shaft and grease it.

Hi Bob,
When the twist release quit working, I took a cold chisel and split the ring which was hard plastic. With the ring removed there was a spring loaded pin under the ring. I can only surmise the ring, when turned, depressed the pin to release the PTO. I used the spring loaded pin to release the shaft about 10 times (it was very diffcult to press down with my thumb)before it stuck, that is when I pulled the spring off the pin and the pin fell out. Still would not release.

Thanks, Dave

You are right there is not a grease fitting on the shaft. I will take your advice and pull the pto apart to grease.
thanks for help.

Tx Jim,
Thank you for taking the time to include the parts drawing, truly appreciated.

The pin your drawing shows is the one I removed.
As this pin only went approximately 2/3's of the diameter of the shaft I am wondering if it does have balls in it that keep the PTO on the tractor shaft, as suggest by "Bob". I will investigate the further and let everyone one know if there are balls inside the coupling.
Thanks,
Dave.

I've never seen the type you have but normally if your yoke had balls they would be shown in photo I posted. I suggest to disconnect the mower and pull tractor away far enough so telescoping shafts slide apart to eliminate binding of shafts.
