3020 light switch

I"m new to working on electrics on "New Generation" stuff.

My ignorance may show here but I"m not worried about that.

My questions are: What does the R2 stand for and what is its function on the 3020 light switch??
It has the 4 head lamps.

I did print the diagrams from the Parts Catalog off the internet but those are kind of small for old eyes to pick out details.

Thanks Ron

Actually, in this case it DOESN'T mean "rear". It marks the terminal next to the headlamp dimming "R"esistor, and is used to power certain lights, at certain switch positions, depending on if there's two or four headlamps.

Here's a schematic from a 4020 SM, which I would ASSUME is similar in this respect to a 31020. In the 4020 manual, at least, it's only shown used with 24 Volt diesels in certain configurations.

I had to edit my post, as the schematic didn't post the first time.

Can you remember at what switch positions the "R2" terminal is powered vs. the "HD2" terminal?

Rear/warning light is "TL".

"R2" is on opposite end of dimming resistor from "HD2".

("R1" is on opposite end of dimming resistor from "HD1".)

OK Rear/warning light is "TL" now tell me what powers the "white work light" IE the black wire if it's not the R2? I don't have that flavor service manual.

OBLIVIOUSLY, R2, which is shown connected to the outer FRONT lights as well, in the diagram I posted where "R2" is used. (Wire #5, Green.)

Then I guess you're admitting that my first statement(It's been several years since I looked at the backside of a 24 V light switch but the "R" would indicate rear light.) is correct.

Tx Jim and Bob,
Hope I didn't create a problem for you. This 3020 is a gas tractor and has 12 volt electrics.

The switch which you kindly posted has more terminals than on the new switch I have for the 3020 12v gasser.

The JD Parts Catalog from JD website gave switch part number AR 28401.

This switch has 6 terminals B (assumed battery), HD1, HD2, FL, TL, R2 and the dimming resistor.

The old switch (which tested bad) also had 6 terminals. There were broken wires for the FL and TL of the old switch and from what I can tell, nothing connected to the R2 terminal.

However, I'm still curious as to what R2 is for. Thanks for your inputs.

Ron: I'am thinking your working on a 12V gas ; & not a 24v diesel; light switch is diff. on gas, If its 68000 & down ser.# ,switch [AR28401] will only have R- ter. not R2. Green wire to outside lights on fenders & dash lamp attach to it. Ser. 68000 & up use AR41288 switch , very similar , it may have R2 - marking on ter. [ same ter.] Hope is helps...

Ron: FL ter.is black wire to rear food lamp, TL ter. is red wire to rear tail [red] lamp. With 4 light fender lamps you won't need resistor; on new switch.. White wire to rear outlet socket , connects dir. to battery or wire going to B ter.on switch...

Yep, Jim, I concede. It's hooked to TWO front lights and ONE rear light, but, obviously, as you state, the majority DOESN'T rule and it feeds the rear lights (actually one LIGHT).
