Can anyone tell me anything about #47 loaders. Am familiar with 48 but never heard of 47. Looking to move round bales with 3020 and one is available. Was it a failed experiment or flash in the pan and would it work for me?

47 FEL's were designed for JD utility tractors not ROWCROP tractors such as a 3020 although there was a mounting bracket for a 2510.

They arent very severe duty, somewhat resemble an old new idea loader. Ive got one on a 2510 and it moves bales nice.

I have a 2510 with a 47 on it. Bought the tractor in 1966 and the loader in 1967. Been on it ever since and has been a good machine. I rebuilt the Gresen valve last year. Have it plumbed directly into the hydraulics due to only 1 SCV. I have picked up a green cypress log 22" in diameter and 16 ft long at my portable sawmill. A green bald cypress log is probably 50% water. Front tires didn't like it a bit, but they held. No problem for a large round bale.

Only drawback I can think of is if the 3020 frame is too wide. I just measured my 2510's frame at 20 inches outside to outside. Any wider would just not be feasible.

The JD 47 manual shows mounting for 2510 and 2020. Nothing else.

IIRC the 2510 frame width is the same as the rest of the small frame rowcrop tractors(3020/4020). I personally think the 47 loader frame & especially the mounts are light for moving large rd bales.

Gosh, Tx Jim, I have no experience with round bales. We fed square bales and silage from a bunk silo. The 47 does have some side-sway and lacks break-out muscle. I have had to keep an eye on the mounting bolts... Tight as you can turn them and two more turns, then double nut. I can say that this has been one spunky little loader for 47 years here on our 700 acre homestead, even after being abused by some of the sorriest hired hands anyone has ever fired. The only thing that has ever broken has been the cutting edge on the bucket.

I'm clad you've had good service from a model 47. What I really mean't was I thought there were better/stronger JD FEL's available than a 47.
