I have a 48 A and I just unhooked the battery for the first time to put a charge on it. It is a 12 volt positive ground. dose it need repolarization? how do you do that on a A. Do all positive ground electrical set ups need to be polarized ?
 
Most of the instruction books I've seen recommend re-polarizing after each battery disconnect.

I also had an old guy that repaired generators and misc. electrical for a living, and he said that you shouldn't need to do it unless the generator and regulator have been separated.

I'm curious if any other experts (John T, others) have an opinion on that.
 
I've been hooking and unhooking batteries for nearly 50 years and never polarized unless I had done generator or regulator work. I suppose it wouldn't hurt anything but I never found the need. John
 
As your old timer stated, it's not really needed even when you've been inside the generator to a limited extent. If done correctly it doesn't hurt a thing to do, but really only needed if it won't charge or is charging backwards. The field poles retain their magnetism quite well, but if you have to change them out then of course it's necessary before firing up the engine.

A good reason for having that advice in the books you've seen would be to insure a 100% match with the polarity of the ground system to the generator's output no matter what the ground system got accidentally changed to during the battery change out. These sorts of things do happen and it wouldn't be a good thing to charge the new battery backwards for any length of time. Tends to let the smoke get out of generators and it's real hard to get it back in there where it will all work right again.

Good all around advice to polarize the generator after you have changed out the battery. Even when it's not needed.
 
While it is recommended, I also never repolarize unless doing a repair. I always unhook my batteries because I just don"t want a fire hazard on those systems that are so old. Never had a problem with no charge or backwards charge.
