Early 2640, had an 8 ft rotary, PTO running 3rd gear high torq uphill lifting the 3 pt mower a tad and it sounded like an ambulence siren, seemed to slow a bit then went on as normal. Didn't think to try low side of the rabbit-turtle. Wonder what?

Hi
could be something to do with low pump flow, pressure/flow valves not right, leaks, or plugged filter in the hydraulic system.

I got a random problem like this with an 1830 hi low pack and other hydraulic function issues,on the yard now.I just ordered $800+ of flow test equipment. Then I can check it all out properly.

It seems to me from reading JD service books, this is a fantastic designed system while it works. When it starts to play up it may be Time to sell it, oops! you just bought it. Hopefully thats not why you own it:(. Diagnosis seems long winded and 20 things all being slightly wrong can cause massive function problems!

Hopefully somebody can help you more than I can at the moment, with your issue. Good luck and I will read replies to see what is said. It might help me a bit more too :).
Regards Robert

My 2240 has done that about twice or three times. Seems to be related to the high-low. I now have the brakes constantly dragging, so it looks like major surgury for that. Maybe I'll see something related to the high-low too.

Sounds like a hydraulic problem that needs to be tested and diagnosed. The siren sound is the hi-lo clutches slipping allowing the planetary assembly to freewheel. Low clutch pressure can be caused by a number of things. First change the filter and check the sump screen. If they are ok then connect gauges and test according to service manual. If it does that again while driving depress the clutch immediately to prevent damage to the hi-lo planetary.

Thanks, everyone for all the knowledge. I'm embarrassed to tell the seem to be fix. About 3 quarts of Hy-Guard. Ran the mower all afternoon smooth as silk.
