Rusty crankcase on A. . .ideas?

Have an A thats been sitting for years and is stuck. Pulled the cover off crankcase and oh my its rusty in there! The crank and rods have thick scaly like rust on them, but it comes right off when you scrape it with your finger. Below it is black iron like you would like to see. Question is, what would work best to clean all of that out? Can i fill the case full with something and let it soak for awhile, and then drain it out when i drop the oil pump? The block is cracked so i plan on pulling that out after i get it cleaned up inside. I am looking at getting this one running before its all said and done.

If the block is cracked then it really doesn't matter because you will be pulling it all apart anyways. If the scale comes off that easy with your finger, I would soak the crank case in some solvent or diesel fuel works well to flush out. Diesel fuel works well as a flushing agent.

if the crank and rods are that bad you will really not like the governor and cam. Unless you really like that tractor for some sentimental reason or have a donor tractor for parts I would find a different tractor to work on. Just saying.

I dont have a needle scaler. I plan on restoring the tractor, and have two other A's for parts as well as loose parts already. Seems like a good winter project, and i like a challenge. The tractor seems low houred to me, has very minimal wear throughout. It was a working tractor on a small farm when the prev owner forgot it had water in it and it froze, busting a 4 inch piece out of the block by the right petcock underneath. I will try diesel fuel, do you think a little mild acid would cause any problems?

I wouldn't worry too much about it personally. Brush out what you can with a stiff brush. Flush with diesel. Then just change the oil and filter frequently for a few rounds once you get it running.

On the first oil change you might want to pull the cover and scoop out any crud around the pump screen, just in case there's a lot.
