starting/timing a 1935 JD B

My 1935 B was seized up due to antifreeze in the cylinder, I got it freed up with diesel but now it doesnt start. Has fire, gas and compression but doesnt start. Is it possible that the timing got off in the process of attempting to pull start the tractor etc.???

Roll it over slowly and see if the left hand plug fires when the LH Impulse mark on the flywheel lines up with the mark at 3 o'clock on the main case.

Did you try to pull start it before you unstuck it?

Is the MAG snapping, or just clunking from setting,as this will show you fire but not enough to START, believe it as we just went thru this with a EDISON, not enough IMPULSE, spring had gotten week from age. New impulse spring, and will take the fly wheel right out of your hand. Yes we had FUEL,COMP & FIRE but not enough *FIRE* to do the job needed.

New wires don't cost much, replace them with new copper core wires just to be sure it's getting to the plugs with all the strength possible. Only the better parts stores will have the copper core spark plug wires in my experience. Bring your old wires so they can cut the new to the exact length needed. As stated earlier you may not have 'enough' spark getting to the plugs to do the job. Does the impulse sound nice and strong when it trips? What model of mag?

Pull starting wouldn't have effected the timing. It sure sounds like a lack of enough spark from a tired old mag to me so far. Old wires will steal the snap away even when the plug fires just laying on top of the block. No good/bad test for them either is worth doing or believing.

I like to blast a little starter fluid in the carb. answers a lot of questions quickly.

if it runs for a bit on that, you"ve proved it"s sparking and in time.

If not, pull the plugs (but leave them hooked up and grounded), put your finger on a plug hole, and slowly turn the engine till you feel you"re on the compression stroke.

then watch the timing mark on the flywheel - make sure it"s sparking at the right spot.

do it for both cylinders - once you do that you"re sure your timing is close enough to start, your wires aren"t reversed, your points are working, your wires are solid, and your plugs are in fact sparking.

if the engine does fire on the starting fluid - your problem is most likely in your carb.
