You have all helped me so much with my Clutch replacement on my 4020 synro shift I have one more question.

What is the procedure for replacing the release bearings? Can they be replaced with out removing the input shaft?

Does the bell housing have to be removed from the transmission ?

Thanks for your continued help. :D

Can they be replaced with out removing the input shaft? Yes just knock off with a hammer

Does the bell housing have to be removed from the transmission ? NO

I use a long bar to removed the throwout
bearing. Pull the pedal all the way forward then
catch the edge of the bearing with the end of a
long bar against the outer side of the bell
housing. You may have to alternate sides.
The pto carrier can then be removed to replace
that bearing. Check the condition of the grease
hose while off.

Wonder what all of you do while in there. Do you also always do the rear main and the input seal ? To do the input seal does that require the split at the tranny ?

I did the rear main on our 4020. don't think I did the input seal. Don't know how much leakage it has ? More seems to run down from the shift levers.

Usually replace rear eng seal. By input seal if you mean the seal where the tran shaft comes out of the pto shaft yes I replace it also. Just grab it with water pump pliers and it comes off.

Thanks for the input. I assume from the comments that the transmission bearing comes off separate from the bearing collar and the collar stays on the shaft?

If that is correct after the bearing is removed do I have to disconnect the operating linkage from the PTO operating Sleeve so it can be removed or will the PTO bearing and collar come out on its own while leaving the operating sleeve on the shaft with some tapping ?

It's been awhile since I did ours. I can't remember if I did that one or not ? Hope I did but it works and doesn't leave any big oil spots around except for the loader lift cylinder that could use repacked. Barely gets any use anymore.
Even before when it did get used more we only put like 600 hours on it since 1991.

The collar usually comes off the tube, sometimes easy sometimes very tight.
You might have to disconnect the pto operating rod in the bell housing so the fork will allow the carrier to be removed. Occasionally the bearing will come off but usually is pressed. Check collar that engages the pto fingers for wear.

Well I got to work on my tractor some last night and got the transmission clutch and pto clutch release bearings out. The transmission bearing came out fairly easy but the bearing collar was a bit of a challenge but it did see it my way and came off the shaft.

The pto bearing was another problem I had to remove the sleeve bearing and collar as a unit . To do this I had to knock the clutch fork shaft out to lower the fork and allow the unit to slip off. After I get the 20 years of grease :D off of it I will see what I have to do to separate the collar from the bearing from the operating sleeve.

Thanks again for every ones help and advise on my project. :D
