GM steering

I have a 1947 GM.The bearings are bad in the steering gear box. I have tried to remove the front bearing retainer but it will only move out 1/2 inch. Does anyone have a idea. Thanks Steve

leave the steering wheel on it and turn it slowly, so as the shaft turns its way out it will apply pressure and hopefully push the retainer the rest of the way out.
