How to fasten side hood molding, 4020

My 4020 has obvious aftermarket side moldings on it, similar to these http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/John-Deere-4020_Side-Hood-Molding-Left_AR28049.html. They are about falling off now.

They just have aluminum posts on the back side, about 1/8" dia. I read that you use U-type speed nuts to attach it to the hood. How do those things work? I have what I think is the right size, but I can't figure out how to get them on there. Certainly not speedy for me, but I'm sure I'm doing it wrong. The clips that are remaining are some sort of speed nut, but don't seem to have held very well.

Thanks for all your help!

JD spring nuts just pressed on the stud.

I buy the nuts from a true value hardware store. They fit better and can be put on with a 7/16 socket.

Go to your Deere dealer and use the proper fasteners. They push on and can be removed by sliding them to the wider end of the slot.

The john deere ones slip, that's the problem. There not made right.Have you ever looked at the side
emblems john deere sells.Cheap crap!

The moldings I have are definitely cheap crap! But they have what appears to be the straight JD clips with the small and big slot already, and they don't stay put. The posts on the back of the molding don't have any kind of groove in them, they are just straight. Anyway, I will try to find the clips that Tx Jim posted.

You don't need any groove with the ones from true value. They are self grooving, just twist them on like a nut.I use a 7/16 socket with a round handle anf just twist them on.The ones from JD will just come loose again.

Yes they are like the aftermarket ones that don't have raised letters. There are aftermarket ones with raised letters like the original Deeres but cost more . Those are the ones I use.

I ended up ordering them from JD, (R42662 for anybody coming across this thread in the future). We'll see if they work or not. I tried looking for them at other places, as well as the kind you screw on, but never really found anything in town here. I'll let you know how it works.

Mine are the flat lettered, cheap looking ones. That's what came on it when I got it.

I finally used the JD clips to install the side logos. I haven't really put them to the test, but I guess they'll hold ok. They were the same as what I had on there, and I was missing a bunch, so I'm not overly optimistic.

Grabbing an old post and bumping it to the top with your question, to save typing your issue out, doesn't work well because of the two different formats, Classic and Modern, the YT forums use. Yes, it moves to the top for those people who use the Modern view. However the people using Classic view only see your post. Because of the age of the original post, the original post you are referring to does not "bump up" in Classic. Thus you will not get much help, and some off the wall replies, when all they see is: "Bump this to the top, mine just began doing this exact thing, has anyone been able to nail down a reason or come up with a solution?"

Do yourself a favor; Start a new post of your own, identify what your tractor is, and fully describe the symptoms and what you may have tried to correct the problem. That way users of both views will see what you are asking for help with.
