Water in the crankcase !

I have a 37 unstyled A. It has been sitting for some time, we got it running and I realized that it was going through ALOT of water/ coolant. When I opened the crankcase it was full of water. Also the manifold studs had been replaced with bolts before I bought the tractor. So here's my question... is it possible that the water is getting into the crankcase that way? or am I probably looking at a cracked block ?
 
Manifold bolts or studs would be the same if sealant was used. But if water was going into the manifold, it would smoke white, and if left sitting would fill the cyl, and wouldn't turn over. Remove the crankcase top, fill the radiator, and watch the back of the cyls.
 
I got bolts in mine. It leaked around the head of the bolt. I put some thread sealant like you put on pipe threads on the bolt threads and it stopped the leak. If that aint it your probaly looking at a crack head or block and it could be a leaky push rod tube.You could take off the valve cover and see if you have any water running down out of the push rod tubes.If its a crack in the head or block you should have some compression bubbles in the radiator when its running.Also could be a blown head gasket.
 
I have seen the water draining down from between the cylinders.. it actually runs out fairly quickly. I guess I was being an optimist hoping that I could maybe just replace the studs/ have the head worked, rather than a new block.
 
I am going with PBB on this one. I believe it would be the push rod tubes if the A has them. My '37 B had them and it would have drained all my coolant if I hadn't changed them when I had it tore down. Pin holes everywhere in them. Not a hard job, but not a quick job either.

I would go with push rod tubes I've seen it take valve cover off fill it up with water and watch. Done them with head on ran a tap in them got a bolt used a steel sleeve with a bigger i.d. tighten the bolt throught the sleeve pulls them right out
 
Push rod tubes,just fixed one for a fella that saved himself money with the bolt trick and turned around and spend several dollars removing the head and putting push rod tubes in for nthe second time but this time I put studs in for him and done the whole job.He had had enough
