Model R cylinders: Different versions? (pics!)

Hi,

I'd like to know more about the two (or more?) cylinder versions which can be seen on Model R.

Here's the version which I have in my 1949 Model R, serial # 3895:

As you can see, the complete cylinders are surrounded by the water jacket.

The other version I have seen on Model Rs is this:

On this version it seems as if the water jacket does not reach to the end of the cylinders.

Both cylinders versions have the same parts # casted into them. The I&T book shows "my" version with the elongated water jacket, the parts list shows the other version.
The picture with the "shorter" water jacket is of a Model R with serial # 18,xxx, which makes it a later one. I saw another cylinder of this version on a Model R that was somewhat older than mine (which is indeed an early one).

Who can help me?

Best regards,

Hendrik from Germany

Hello Hendrick, Both cyl's are the same, and interchangeable. The only difference is the old cyl. has more cast iron at rear of cyl. There is no water jacket in that area.
