John Deere A hydraulic

I just mounted a 237 John Deere picker to a John Deere A 1948 problem is that when I raise the picker up as soon as I let off lever it starts to lower by its self all the way down I used a John Deere cylinder with (hydraulic-stop type) it has two hoses that hook into the power trol on the left side into pioneer couplers not into the original outlets with funny couplers the book says that tractors with one way hydraulic must use a breather in the cylinder so could the power trol be bad? or bad cylinder? or just hooked up wrong? thanks for any advise Howard Parker

sorry the pioneer couplers come out the right side of power trol not the left side its been long day just hooked up picker by my self after work id love to post photos of the outfit just need to get them from phone to this web sight but don't no how to thanks agin Howard

The hydraulic cylinder is probably leaking through, or the tractor valves are leaking. Try another cylinder first. That 237 is a great picker, it would be better with live power. I used one on a 50 for years, noisy, but I enjoyed picking corn with that 237. If you need parts, I have a good one, if not too far away.

I was wondering if you hooked up the hoses in reverse if you couldn't get it to work right. Heard one time that some sort of pressure relief is built into the system and you could be overriding that pressure limit. But in reverse the pressure could be under that particular one's pressure relief. Can't remember if top or bottom is to have the higher pressure relief setting. Easy enough to swap them around and give it a whirl. Hope that makes sense...Been a long day.

Have you used the Powr-Trol on other equipment either with the rockshaft or a remote cylinder? If it worked good then the cylinder on your picker is bad.

Is the Metering screw on the left side turned all the way in?

The check valves may not be working right due to scoring or trash stuck in them. It's possible some of the parts in the check valves (spring or check ball) are missing.

Leaking cylinder packing on the machine cylinder or the rockshaft cylinder packing or gasket leaking or the o-rings on the plugs in the back leaking. These o-rings are inside the housing.
If you had or could borrow the plugs that go right into the back you could bypass the rockshaft system.

well it is the tractor that has the problem I hook up hydraulic hoses to a different tractor and it stayed up are you saying if I hook up through original outlets instead of through the right side plugs it might stay up? how hard is it to rebuild power trol? thanks Howard

It's worth a try because when hooked to the side ports you are also still connected to the rockshaft cylinder. that rockshaft cylinder could be leaking past the packing or the cylinder gasket. To fix the cylinder gasket the back cover of the tractor needs to come off. Not a bad job.
