cutting hay with a mid mount sickle mower

I am cutting hay with a 3020 narrow front tractor and a mid-mount sickle mower. How do you cut square corners? I now go to the corner, raise the mower and make a loop and come down the next swath. Is there a way to cut a square corner without leaving a lot of standing hay or plugging up the mower?

Been a number of years since i cut hay, but as I remember it, with a #50 side mount on a 4010D, you cut all the way thru, make a sharp turn, and the cutter bar will enter & never leave anything uncut. This was the nicest mowing outfit I ever operated.

Sometimes it takes a little practice but as soon as the cutter bar clears you should be able to hit the right hand brake and have the right rear wheel in position for the next swathe. you might have to raise the cutter bar a little so you dont clog up entering the next swath. I used to make square corners with a B and rear mounted # five mower. It should be a piece of cake with your setup. Have fun.

Both the descriptions given by [b:654c4848f0]donwisc[/b:654c4848f0] and [b:654c4848f0]jd40an[/b:654c4848f0] will work good for you.

If your 3020 has power steering, then with a little practice cutting square corners will be easy.

Before you know it you can do it with one hand.

Hope this helps.

I have cut a lot with old #5"s and 50 side mounts,,you can"t make the same square corner with the 50 as you can with the rear mount, you lose the hook action of the rear mount that gives the clean corner.

Never tried it with a John Deere mid-mount, but I could make square corners with Dad's Allis B and a mid-mount mower without stopping. When the rear wheel is just even with the uncut hay, lock the right brake, turn sharply right, and keep on going. It was a great mower to use, but needed constant repair. Some day I might put it back on just to see if I still don't like keeping it running.
