Ok, several months ago I purchased a new ignition switch and cut out relay for my 1950 John Deere M. What I did not do was read the fine print online about what I bought. I actually bought a voltage regualtor instead of a cut out relay ands I bought the wrong ignition switch. The stuff that I bought was for a 420/430. Since it has been a couple months since I purchased these and I dont have the receipt I decided to wire the tractor using the 420/430 schematics. Every thing works except the amp gauge does not move. I also replaced this with the correct one (I got this through K&K). I measured the voltage off of the genreator and I have 6.65vdc. What am i missing here? Should I just bite the bullet and purchase the correct cut out relay and ignition switch? Thanks

The M, MC switch has multi positions for high or low charging to be used with the cutout. I would get the correct parts myself. That said, I have switch in place of the cut out relay. Has a light wired in it so that I remember to turn it off.

Yes, I am aware of the different settings of the switch. Same switch as my MT and MI. I just dont really want to spend another $100.00 bill if I can avoide it for the time being.

Most of the online stores are selling the wrong M switch and a good many the reg as well. They don't do their homework and think all Dubuques are the same.

As long as you used the 420 with a regulator diagram the only difference you'll see is the regulator will keep it from overcharging the battery on long runs. The cut-out won't regulate the current. The 420 style is better even if it isn't correct.

At 6.6v you are charging but I doubt that would move the needle. It usually doesn't on a fully charged system except at start up. If you aren't staying charged double check your grounds and then go through John T's troubleshooting guide. You'll find it here easy doing a search.
