41 A starts runs good in all gears no knock, but park it and at real low idle a knock can be heard at flywheel crankcase area. Cant say where it is exactly. Raise engine speed it leaves. The clutch drum moves in and out 1/8" give or take a 8th with the knock. The knock is not a knock as much as a clack and not every cycle of the flywheel. Good oil pressure too.

You need to set crankshaft endplay at .05-.010. NOT 1/8" which is .125" . Your clunk could be the clutch driver and or the gears on the fan shaft and gears inside governor slapping together from being worn out. My 44 A does that too at a real low idle. Bump throttle up so it doesn't do that.

I know there is a bit of gov lag to the rpms. Are you saying the in and out movement of the clutch drum is proportional to crankshaft endplay?

Well, the Clutch IS mounted ON the Crankshaft...

With the clutch engaged, there should be NO clutch movement, leaving only Crankshaft End-Play..

Ron..

Dis-engaged, the clutch must be free enough to allow the facings to freely slip..!!

When engaged, it clamps the facings and is one with the crankshaft..

Ron.
