4020 will not move

I have a "71" 4020 quadrange. It will go in gear (forward or reverse)but when clutch is released it bogs engine down and will not move.I have a loader and it moves up and down so I guess hydraulics are ok.Could brakes be locked up?

Has it been towed any lately ?? could have a top shaft gear gaulded,, or it could have the differential pin poking out and against the PTO shaft or pinion...

Hi
Could be stuck between 2 gears I never fixed this tractor it was a 4020, Guy just used me to find what was wrong for free, buy telling me the job was mine. Then fixed it with his buddy cause they couldn't figure it out!.
He changed gear in the field to go into top gear I believe.

It went between the 2 ranges and stuck. it stopped moving so fast it put the steering wheel in his chest.
The problem with his was the syncro piled and stuck the 2 gears together on the top shaft.
I managed to lever and rock it back and forth to free it, with the trans top off.
That was a high hour tractor but had low flow in the transmission pump and lack of lubrication didn't help it, from what I was told buy another guy later, that new him.

Slight correction: 4020's had Syncro-range trans. Quad-range trans didn't appear until the 30 series tractors. Besides the things other posters mentioned you could try loosening the brake bleeder screws on each side. It's possible the brake master cylinder is faulty.

Was in the seat of a 4020 in 1st going through a groundhog village with a 15' field cultivator. Came out the far side of the village, clutched & shifted to 3rd, gently started back up & it took off like normal but then stopped so fast the fan squealed as it spun in the stalled belts. I slid back up into the seat & it was exactly as you describe. Started and ran but would not move no matter what! Had to pick it up & carry it to the shop. It was the top shaft forward gear synchronizer as others have said. There was enough wear in there that it went into both the high and low forward speeds at the same time. We opened him up, got it unstuck, split the tractor, said goodbye to many pictures of Mr. Franklin as we replaced many parts in there and put it all together.

Gained even more respect for the machine! Any machine that can lock up so suddenly yet not actually break anything deserves respect! So too those who built it!

Had forgotten how nicely they shift when not worn out! That was like 10 years ago & it's been sweet ever since.

It's fixable.
