John Deere A Rockshaft Spring

What is a safe trouble free method for removing a 1950 JDA rockshaft, starting with the spring retaining cap on the RH side?

What I have read is "use a suitable tool" to hold the retaining cap, but I'm a little leary of knowing what a suitable tool is.

Is the retaining cap trying to rotate clockwise or cntrclockwise?

It will turn toward the front of the tractor (clockwise). I use a large
pipe wrench. Doesn't do the paint any good but a paint gun or
squirt can will take care of that
