re.3020 gas starter

I decided to do some more checking on the starter today. I was surprised to find continuity between the main lead which attaches to the selenoid and the case. I disassembled the starter and the ungrounded brush leads also had continuity to the case. I had performed this test a few engine hours ago and it was open. The grommet was in place no problem there.
There must be a bare wire in the windings touching the case or pole. I have been trying to find this problem from a year ago when we got the tractor. It had been an intermittent problem.
Now it will get a different starter.

The screws that hold the selenoid on this starter do not attach to the case. They attach to the starter nose. Thanks

I decided to pull the field coil unit from starter case. There was a bare spot causing a direct short to case. It is beyond repair.
