Current 720 price range

A local widow (north central ND) is looking to sell a 720 diesel. Both engines run reasonably well and the power steering pump has just been resealed. (By me.) There IS a wear issue with the hi-lo range shift fork/rail, but otherwise the tranny is OK. (I put some bearings down deep in there some years (but not many hours) ago.

I"d like to own it but am not flush with cash at the moment. She asked me for advice as to a price range, and I said I"d ask on here and get back to her. Apparently, a local (and I am quite sure "HONEST") auctioneer is after it, as well as a couple of guys that think they want to USE it, but have NO 2-cylinder diesel experience.

I told her she would be better of the try to sell it to a collector who would understand and appreciate it than the aforementioned characters.

Ideas, guys?

I don't mean to give a short answer but, they sell for more than they are worth.
John Deere has had a large collector market that will pay prices above most other tractor makes.

Prices are dropping. Fewer and fewer people raised on farms nostalgic for the old tractor of Dad's or grand Dad's that they drove as a kid.
To large to haul easily.
Doesn't fit in a standard automotive garage.
The few collectors building collections now are looking for late 1960's and 1970's era .

I bought my 720 diesel with a schwarts wide front and aftermarket 3pt for $4000 last year. pony start and both engines are good and don't use oil. Its an older repaint and well kept but has been used. I have had to replace the rear rims and it had car tires on the front... but overall condition otherwise I would say a 7 out of 10... Hope that helps!

Without any photos or test driving of the subject tractor we are like doctor's giving medical advice over the phone, just guessing. If the tractor is in field working condition, has most of the gauges working, straight tin, lights & fenders, good tires, no major leaks, working hydraulics and 3 pt, etc it should be worth at least $5000 on the low end and $8750 on the higher end. If you have issues with the PTO, crankshaft, flywheel, radiator/waterpump, injector pump, axle seals, clutch, piston rings, valves etc you can easily be looking at another 5-10,000 dollars in repairs. You can buy a new generation tractor with a lot more features for the price of a good diesel two cylinder. I agree with the suggestion to take it to an auction and let the peanut crowd decide the value of this tractor. Doesn't matter who buys the tractor unless a relative of owner is involved and then it becomes a family issue. I personally wouldn't pay more than 4500-5500 so I would have some room to baseline minor tractor issues. These big two cylinder John Deere diesels are great tractors but it takes a collector with deep pockets and a passion for Big Green.

Bob, without actually seeing it etc Id guesstimate it for a low of $3000 and a high of $6500 FWIW

Some 730s have made crazy prices in recent times. This might have a positive influence on the price of your tractor. 720s and 730s are capable of field work at low operating costs and without depreciation. I have used a 730D for 30 years - it has outlasted many other tractors - I expect it to carry on for many more years yet. I can not say the same for my other machines. Do not believe those who say the value of a two cylinder diesel is solely driven by collectros.
