Ok So I bought a 730 diesel from a guy that had the pony motor taken an out and converted to electric start, but when he tried to start it once he said it cracked the bracket that holds the new electric starter. So I guess here is my question, how many teeth are suppose to be on the starter gear to match up with a pony start fly wheel? or is the flywheel ring gears the same on the electric start and pony start and it's just the wrong starter all the around?

They only used ONE ring gear for both pony start and electric start according to PC-532.

As already stated the flywheel is the same pony or electric start . The pic shows the proper gear for a late type DE and the entire drive is the replacement service part for the same starter . As you can see they have 13 teeth . I would check this first . Was the bracket a repop ?

Forgot to put the pic in - ooppppss

IIRC that same ring gear fits the long hood A's ?
I think that's what I had laying around to rob them from to get the 720-730 pony machines back good again.

For what it is worth I have heard that if the starter is reengaged with the diesel turning backward from compression stroke it will crack the bracket. Always let the flywheel come to a complete stop.

It does have 13 teeth on the gear. It may of been like someone mentioned engaging when the engine hadn"t stop turning yet on an compression stroke. The bracket is a cast iron reproduction thing. I don"t know if i should consider changing it or not.

Thanks for the info. I"ll keep you posted i think I"m going to repair the bracket and see what happens and go from there that will tell me more of what's going on i think......?????
