What year John Deere A?

I recently bought a john deere model A but the serial tag is gone and I have no idea what year. One of my buddies estimates between a 1947-1949 but for parts ordering I need to know closer. is it +584000

584000 was the first "late-styled" A in late '47 and had the first battery box seat.

Your battery box is not original but if your A originally came with one then your A is 584000 +

Seeing the weight brackets and kill switch what weight class do you pull in and how many rpms are you turning.
 
45-47. I'm thinking because of the steering pedastal. My 44 A
has a round pipe and not the square stand for the throttle and
shutters. I do see it looks like a hand start flywheel ?? But with
the distributor it's probably electric start being its a puller. It
has a gas intake/exhaust manifold. The oil fill is a capped pipe
by the clutch arm instead of the crankcase breather that's
ahead of the steering pedastal like on my A. What's the
numbers on the block and main case ?
 
Pressed Steel frame makes it 47 to 49. Has the newer steering wheel pedestal, with light tubes removed, original flywheel replaced with hand crank style, and the pivot ear for the starter foot pedal is still there.
 
Just based on the sideways picture it is between SN
584000-647999 (maincase A3290R). This is about
March 47 through November 49 (late 47 model year
through early 50 model year). There might be parts
on it from other years. I don't know a lot of
details on late styled A's, but don't believe there
is much that will narrow it down any more than
that.

Its still hand crank im wanting to put electric start on it but im afraid the engine has been balanced with the hand crank flywheel

Looks to be above 584000 SN. With parts from earlier tractors added here and there. You should be able to put electric start flywheel on without any problems. I did vice versa on an earlier A that was hand crank and worked out fine. You will need the later A flywheel though that takes the big tin nut, cant tell in pics but hopefully it dont have an earlier crank without the threaded end. If it does, then you wont be changing just the flywheel. Unless you use older A flywheel with ring gear but i dont know if that will work with your starter on the bottom, because those earlier As had the starter on the top. But that wont work in your situation. If you need help i can walk you thru what your gonna need.
 
The only concern I have is the fact that it HAS had motor work done... Which flywheel do I need? where can I buy one

That part number lists for a JD60? I trust you.how does it attach? should probably start a new thread when I get closer to the swap
 
Yes it indeed does, but thats because the 60 used the same flywheel. Now when attaching the correct flywheel, if you do indeed have the right crank thats supposed to be in there, you will see the splines on the crank as well as threads. Slide the flywheel on, but make sure you have the timing marks lined up before hand and the pin in line with the oil slinger. . .you might have to use a dead blow hammer to get it on. Run it in until the pin engages with the slinger, then use the big metal nut to set the endplay. Will possibly need a block of wood against the clutch to keep it from moving out and giving you a false setting. Then tighten the bolts on the flywheel, but dont use a big bar use a torque wrench and set them at the values specified in the Service manual or I&T book. When your done, take a punch and bend out the tabs on the metal nut to set it in place.
 
There is no service manual for the A.

SM-2004 is the service manual for the B, serial# 96000 (1941) & up. The A and B are similar enough to make it very useful. That's probably the reason there never was one for the A.
 
Ok are most of the torque specs the same
I was reading somewhere that a guy replaced the oil seal behind flywheel (next order of business) and cracked his flywheel or something and now the motor wont run... because he over torqued it or something of that nature
