Deere 48 loader?

I'm not a fan of tractor loaders - much prefer a skid steer loader. But they are more handy when feeding round bales to cattle on pasture in winter. I have a 4430 open station tractor and have found a 48 loader for $1800 nearby. The loader had been on a 4010. This loader will only ever haul a 1500ish pound bale on the front. I do everything with my skid steer and have no desire to try to scoop poop or snow with the loader (unless I gotta to get the bales out to the cattle). Would a 48 hold up to hauling bales with a 4430? Is the single bucket cylinder an issue?

I have a 48 loader and it will do it but as you mentioned the single cylinder is the weakest part of the loader. As far as lifting the booms will lift fine though. Assuming the center cylinder works like it should it will do it if you take it easy but if you can find something a bit bigger i'd go with that.

I agree with David. you will be disappointed with all the work on mounting a 48 loader on a 4430. it is just to small a loader for the tractor AND for what you want to do. spend a little extra and get a 148. it has double cylinders for the bucket. The best bet is a 158. but they are pricey. Good luck

I agree with jd. Look for a 158 or a good Du-al
loader. 4430 is a bit too big for a 148.

I'm going to disagree with the other posters. If all you want to do is put out rd bales in the Winter I think a $1800 JD 48 will suffice. Go price a 148 and that will help make your mind up. I know it would my mind{$4000-$5000) down here. I agree the single(DA) bucket cylinder has it's limits but it will work just fine for feeding. Back when I worked for a JD dealer many local dairies had & used 48 loaders every day.

I have a 48 loader on my 2550 (yes, wrong loader for that series, but it is what it is). Works fine for 5x5 rounds. 5x6 rounds can be lifted but the single cylinder will not move up with that much weight. 4x5 rounds absolutely no problem.

I think you fellas are right that the 48 loader wouldn't be acceptable. It might be fine for bales, but then I go a do something that the tractor is capable of, but not the loader. Thanks for the info.
