JD A altanator

I have a 48 A that had already been converted to 12 volt system. The bearing went out in the altanator and im needing a new one. I took the old one to Orileys and they looked up the number on the altanator and said that it came off a 73 Ford F-100 6 cyl. They got one for 31 dollars. Its a Autolite that takes the use of a voltage regulator. The parts man said that it self polorizes its self. The guy said if I didnt want that one I could get a GM one wire. My question is do I just replace it with the Autolite or would it be better to get the GM altanator? I been told that some altanators you have to rev the engine up to 900 rpms to get it to charge. Which way would be better?

You can get self exciting regulators in Delcos. I expect that's what a one wire has.
Someone is confused about the self polarizing.
If the Motorola requires an external regulator I think I would use something with an internal regulator. Delco is probably the simplest.

Easy. If you can just replace what you have and have it work, for $31 -do it. Why bother messing around and starting another ball of shirt. HTH

I would have bought a 6203 double seal bearing for $4 off eBay last summer, have it on hand just for this occasion and simply change it out when needed. If you ordered the bearing now you would be down a week or so if it's not coming from China. If you don't need it right away, I wouldn't pay even $31 for a fix.

You better verify the bearing size you really need though before you go buying anything. Grudgingly the parts store will sell you a bearing for $17 but don't expect them to be happy for you. Or grateful.

Nothing will be cheaper than the alternator you already have, you just need to fix it or have it fixed for you. Delco one wire is a headache you couldn't give to me. I wouldn't be going back to your parts store either, but that's just me. Did they even offer you a new bearing? They got a handful in the back and that's a fact. Be sure you pin your brushes out of the way properly when you put your alternator back together or you will need to buy new brushes too - the parts store WON'T have those on purpose. In order to force you to buy a NEW alternator, price of brushes elsewhere is 4 bucks or so. RockAuto has them as in dot com. Before the internet I would get them from electrical supply houses, but good ones are hard to find anymore, always moving too.

At this point in time, "Autolite" is a REBUILDER that has NOTHING to do with the original Autolite name, NOR do they MANUFACTURE alternators.

Some time ago, I replaced the fried Delco alternator on my Chevy car with an AUTOLITE rebuilt I found CHEAP on ebay. Simply a Delco rebuilt by some outfit in Texas using (under license, I ASSUME) the Delco name.

I have replaced many generators with Delco one wire alternators from Napa on our old two cylinders and they have all been good. Never had trouble with getting them to kick in, but have heard of people having that problem. I just put one on my 60 and it starts charging every time at less that half throttle. I wouldn't be afraid at all of the Delco...
