Instrument cluster on 2150

While mowing hay today with my 2150 my tach stopped working and almost immediately the instrument cluster filled up with smoke.
The engine was running normal so I unhitched the haybine and took the tractor back to the house. After I shut her down I tried to restart and nothing.
Anybody else ever run into this? What am I looking at to fix her up?

If on a open station, look under instrument cluster for any burnt wiring or anything that looks like it got hot. Maybe one of the relays burnt.

I had time to tear things apart and here's what I found.
Both batteries are swelled out on the sides and bone dry of battery acid. For the past couple weeks while using the tractor I kept smelling sulfur or rotten egg smell. Couldn't figure out what it was, now I'm assuming it was the batteries?? Could this be from over charging? So if so is the alternator/regulator to blame? Could this over charging have taken out my gauge cluster? I was able to find a cluster on Ebay but need some advise before I buy an alternator.

I think I'd test the alternator & regulator before purchasing anything. JD's price for a regulator for a 55A alt. is fairly high.
