Recently purchased a 1958 model 620. Tractor is in great shape and is mechanicly sound. Compression readings are 125# both sides. Anyway, when the tractor is first started and you take off in road gear, it feels like there is a pull to the left in the steering. If i let go of the wheel it will veer left. As the tractor warms up, lets say after ten min or so, the pull goes away and when you let of the wheel it will drive straight for a long ways.one finger steering at idle sitting still. Roll a matic narrow front. Any ideas? Also are front wheels stamped 1268 the correct front rims for this tractor? In the narrow postion the center rib of a 6.00 -16 tire sticks out past the frame, when wheels dished the other way they really get wide. When comparing the roll a matic to other tractors in my area, the wheels sit closer together, and the knees look thicker and more heavy duty. Could it possibly have a heavy duty front end on it? Or was something like this even available at the time? Thanks in advance!

Your steering valve is ever so slightly off center, and with cold oil, it is drifting. the symptom goes away as the oil warms up.

You can try to center it (best to get the JD manual)but you may or may not make it better. this can be difficult to get perfect.

Or better, let it idle 10 minutes or so before heading off down the road. Better for engine, and simpler.

Good luck!

JD1268 front wheels are correct on your tractor. Deere began to offer a heavy duty rollomatic at some time during production of the 30 series two-cylinders. By that time the new generation was getting close and a heavier rollomatic was planned for them, so what is standard for a 3010 or 4010 became the heavy duty for a 630 or 730. If you download the 620/630 parts catalog from jdparts you should be able to figure out what you have. The parts catalog will show the JD1091 rim used on 630 heavy duty rollomatics.

Ok thanks a bunch guys. I think I will leave the steering alone for now. . .it works great otherwise. As for the wheels, I guess I will just leave those the way they are too. I compared roll a matics with a 4020 at work, they both have the same part numbers so I guess I know what my front end is off of! Thanks again.
