70 clutch issue

couple weeks ago i noticed oil coming out of the clutch drum on my 70 and the clutch started to slip. finally got around to taking it apart and could find nothing wrong(other than some oil) and the clutch needed major adjusting. cleaned everything up and put it back together and noticed i had a gap between the bolt that holds it all together on the outside, and the clutch gear. like the first metal disc went onto the crank too far. it would move the drum in and out. i added a shim to the bolt for now to get it going, but wondering why it's doing it.
thanks
Gary

usually the splines get warn between the clutch driver and the crank if not kept tight .Was the bolt bottoming out.I f I remember right there should be 1/4 " difference with the clutch driver sticking out past crank.

the bolt was not bottoming it would tighten up ok. just moved the drum so far that i was concerned as my 60 dont do that and neither does a friend of mine's 70. i put a washer spacer between the to take up the slack but wondered if that was why i was having some of my clutch issue that it went out of adjustment so fast.

yes it did, seemed very loose to me so plan on getting a new one. figured that was the reason the bolt was not tightening it all up.

Our 70 has about 1/4" of driver hanging off the end of the shaft...that is I believe about spec. but they do wear; both the driver and the crank...Mr. Thinker just addressed it in Green Mag I think two issues ago, I am not near it at the moment, but I believe he said it was Detweilers that have 3 different sizes of undersize drivers available to compensate.
