water pump question

I'm replacing the water pump on my 50 LP. The replacement pump (from Steiners) has a port for the bypass tube. My tractor does not have the bypass tube and the pump came with a plug for that hole.
My question is this. The hole has an O ring in it, and it looks like that plug just pushes into the hole. Is that really all I have to do, and it won't leak? There are no threads or anything.
Also, the plug is square on one end, but on the other end it narrows down and has a series of ridges or tiny splines on it. If all I have to do is stick this in the hole, which end goes in first?
This is my first encounter with one of these. Thanks for the help!

Not trying to be unhelpful, but um, wouldn't contacting Steiners be the first step (seeing as they presumably sold it to you)? Then if you're still unsure or unimpressed, bring it here?

I certainly plan to do that. But there's usually a wealth of knowledge on these forums, and I figured certainly someone on here would have been familiar with this, or would have dealt with this before. Apparently that is not the case. Sorry to have bothered you.

Rich,
I've used that pump before without the bypass tube. Yeah, that's all there is to it. Install the o-ring if it's not. Lube it with a little vaseline and push the plug in. It's fairly tight but just to make sure I usually stake with a puncture wound punch in a few spots. Good Luck! John

Thanks John! I did also call Steiners today and they also verified that that's all there is to it. I had just never run across one of those before and it looked a little strange. Guess I'll put it in tomorrow and see what happens.
