My 2640 at start up kinda has a deep rattle almost like an ether knock (even tho it hasn't had either and starts quick). Also at shut-down. Helper was running it today at too-high a gear and too little rev and it was rattling. Revved up. it's a smooth runner. I have a hunch this is a hydraulic pump noise, but what do I know! Any ideas?

I could be the clutch torsion springs (the one's in the clutch hub). We had a lot of trouble with this noise when they were new on all the utility models. I have put disc's in with solid centers to cure the problem, back then it seemed a new stock clutch would rattle with in a year of use, Deere's answer to the problem back then was to set the idle up..

Very common hydraulic pump drive problem. Takes an half-hour fix and $10 in parts if you catch it in time.

If the noise goes away whenever you use a hydraulic function - then that's the problem. Does it get quiet when you spin the steering wheel?

Thanks, men, for the advice. Will it hurt to run it some? Revved up half throttle raking hay it seemed quiet, except at start-up.

Yes. If you have the type pump drive that most older JDs have - there are four little plastic biscuits that attach to four steel posts. If you catch in time, all you need to fix is the four biscuits (maybe $10?). If you keep using it - the hard metal parts wear out and then repair costs more. Every time it hammers you're hearing metal parts slamming against metal parts.

YT sells the parts here. I just put some in my Deere 300B.
