Hey guys, I"m working on a 430s #156638 five speed tans no live power. The guy said it made a lot of noise in third and fifth gears. I did hear the noise I"m pretty sure in fourth as well. It is a very loud growling - howling noise, I split the tractor at the transmission, (under the dash) but nothing really pops out at me to be worn or damaged, the input shaft bearing in the front of the case seems worn, but this since it only makes noise in the higher gears I"m not sure. The pinion shaft seems to have a little end play as well as up and down play. Anything specific on these tractors to look for?

pull the top off the trans. and take a look at the cluster gears, also as long as your there replace the bearing and seal on the imput shaft. The clusters have a bad habit of getting beat up also the bearing that is associated with it gives out, check your parts book

You can rebuild the tranny and it still will make noise. That's the nature of the 420-430 tractors. They used straight cut gears which created noise as they wear. The later 1010 seies used spiral cut gears that were a lot more quiet.
