Rough running rebuilt tractor

Rebuilt a 1938 D a year or so ago - rings, head, carb, etc. Has started and ran real well up to a week ago. Went to start it it and cranked and cranked and didnt even get a pop. Put new plugs in it to day and had to crank for quite awhile but did get it started, however it ran real rough, sounked like it was missing, backfired several times and then died. I know its getting plenty of gas so I'm thinking a mag issue. wondering if I should start with points and condensor?? Any guidance would be appreciated.

It could be as simple as a build up of corrosion on the points so they don"t make contact.Try cleaning them and see if that helps, as I often have to on our old iron.

Moisture inside the mag cap is often the problem also..
Many times, I have had to remove the mag cap and let the morning Sun shine on it to dry it out..

Run a Business Card thru the Points, to burnish them..
