4040 a detuned 4230?

The 4040 was referred to as a detuned 4230 on the "repair" forum. If this is so, would making the 4040 equal the 4230 be a matter of turning up the injection pump?
My close friend down the road is getting a red 966, and according to external_link, will have more HP than my 4040. Can't have that!
Thanks.
Alan

They are the same tractor,,100hp, give or take a little,,same clutch and transmission as a 44...

Tractordata has the 4040 with 77 tested drawbar HP, and about 90 PTO HP. The 4230 tested 84 drawbar HP and 100 PTO HP.
Maybe that isn't enough to worry about?

Without access to a dyno you really won't know what it is doing. It could of allready been turned up ?

I was a teenager when the 40 series came out and was well-studied on these tractors. I remember reading the brochure and it did say that the 4040 was indeed introduced as a "detuned" 404/4230, set to provide a "rock-solid" 90HP all day long. In much the same way the 4240 was now a 466 producing around 110HP.

We had a 4230 and it produced 104PTO horsepower with no mods. Never got a chance to run or compare with a 4040.

I"m sure you can turn up the fuel a bit and get it to 4230 levels of HP...100-105PTO HP with no other changes.

We messed around with new 4040's back then, most of them were right at 100HP I think Deere listed them lower to make advertising work out...

I don"t know that to be accurate. If the 4040 has the 404 engine, which it should, is the same tractor as a 4230 just the newer series. They are the same.

I believe the 4050 is the tractor which had either the waterloo or Dubuque engine depending on year.

Some 4040's were even weaker than advertised. Had two quadranges in the high 80's PTO HP.
I think you are right about the 4050 with a 466 early and 359 turbo later on. The same engine as a Waterloo 4040 sold in Europe but it was not Dubuque it was German.

I would be surprised if after 30 years the pump hasnt been worked on and most good pump shops set them up about 10%.They are basically the same tractor.I have had a couple and they were just like a strong 4020 usually right at 100HP.For some reason with out a cab they were louder.
