420 smoke out of oil fill/vent

I bought this tractor at an auction. It has sat outside for a while but i dont know how long.I do not know any history of it. Didn't run when I bought it. Cleaned the whole fuel system, Rebuilt carb, new points, cap, rotor, plugs. Changed the oil, nothing seemed unusual. Also adjusted the valves. It starts fairly easily, but doesn't run very smooth. Thought maybe it just needed some running. I hooked up a flat rack and headed to the inlaws a couple miles down the road. Did okay but didn't really clear up. After it got warmed up, an excessive amount of smoke was coming from the oil fill/ breather on the valve cover, especially when working up a hill. Has zero to very little smoke out the exhaust. What do you guys think?
 
Sitting could have stuck some rings, and the smoke is from blow by. If that's what it is, sometimes they clean up and do ok, other times you gotta rebuild.
 
You might try a product like Restore, soe friends of mine had good luck with it. Think there are others. May not work but cheaper than an overhaul to try.
 
We bought an MT once that had your symptoms. We tried all sorts of things to make it run correctly but we were never successful.. It all made sense when we finally pulled the head to find that there was a fairly large hole in the font piston but the missing part was nowhere to be found..... Detonation appeared to be the cause of the problem. Hopefully yours is a easier fix.

I'd do a compression test to see what you have then I would pull the tappet cover to see what might be causing the problem. Many times an engine that sits for long periods of time gets a sticky valve which bends a pushrod/breaks or bends a rocker. The valve lash likely needs setting anyways.
 
If all the shortcuts do not work, a set of rings and cylinder hone will probably put you back in business.
