620 govenor

I was plowing with my new to me 620 when two hours into it the motor started to race and white and blue smoke started coming out of the exhaust. I shut it down right away and found the governor shaft was broke in half and the gear on the fan shaft end of the governor has a couple of teeth broke out. My question is when replacing the governor gear it looks like the fan shaft gear should also be replaced according to the shop manual. How important is setting the backlash and heal? I don't know if the gear on the fan shaft is damaged as the tractor is 275 miles away and I couldn't see good enough in the field where it broke down. Sorry for the long post looking for feed back from people that know?

That's right, the gears should be replaced in pairs. The heal and clearance is important for proper wear. Pat Browning covers this quite extensive in his repair manual. It's for a model H, but the same principles apply. He also goes into a lot of detail on how to achieve the proper clearance and heal. This is best accomplished with the governor and fan shaft both removed and set up as a single unit and installed back on the tractor together.
