JD CYL HEAD PROBLEM

Has anyone planed the manifold side of a "D" cyl head? I purchased an old head for my "D" with the manifold side a little ruff, but thought it would be OK. To make a long story short when I installed the manifold I can insert a .003 feeler gage in 2 different spots under the gasket. If I got it planed would it effect mounting the carb as the manifold will be a little lower?? ....It gets too hot for JB Weld correct??

Personally I have NOT done this on a Model D
But A/B/M 60, 530 , 620 , 630 I have, plained
the manifold & head surfice"s & had NO problems
what so ever....

Thanks, I don"t see that this would be any different than the ones you did. They wouldn"t be taking very much off. The worst is taking the stud bolts out. Is there any chance of cracking the head if I heated it to loosen the bolts up?

I'd let the machine shop guy remove the studs, any problems, he is more likely to solve them quickly. My $02

Planing the head and manifold surfaces is standard practice any time the gasket is renewed. Cant even imagine what you feel wouldnt line up. As far as the studs, heat the STUD red hot & cool it with canning (parraffin)wax from the grocery store. Melt it in untill it no longer melts. Youll get a small fire, & a bit messy. Then WALK AWAY until everything is ROOM TEMPERATURE -entirely cold. If it wont come out now, nothing will get it out , youll have to drill it out. I ha e never seen this method fail. Good luck

Heating them works however they might only move a little at first. Don't rush them work them back and forth they should move a little more each time.

I must say the wax trick worked. I had 2 bolts that I had a lot of pressure on and wouldn"t budge. Put some wax on as you said and out they came. THANKS many times.

I just got a broken off 630 manifold bolt out with candle wax about an hour ago. The bolt twisted off about 1/8" above the head so I welded a nut on it and melted the wax into it. Then I walked away and let it cool, heated the nut red hot again and melted the wax. After it cooled the second time I could turn it just a bit and after cranking back and forth on it thirty times or so I had the broken bolt out. The head is still on the tractor and won't have to come off now so I'm a happy camper. Jim

Have it planed. I do this as a rule any time I replace a manifold gasket. Two cylinders have a weak point at the manifold gasket surfaces.

If you take a fine 'skim" off the manifold mounting face you will be fine.

The used head I bought had putty in places under the nice shiny paint. After planing the surface, I discovered that nothing lined up and I had to machine a 5/16" thick spacer plate to raise the manifold so the carb, air pipe, and air cleaner would bolt up.
There is very little lee-way on these components because they all are hard-mounted to each other and to the block.

JGC
