embarrasing question

I have a 40 that I'm trying to get going. I haven't gotten a manual yet. Trying to get it started, and bt the time I try the different combos on dash, its flooded. It has a switch on dash that has off, I , L, B, and d. I'm thinking that is for ignition, lights, battery and no idea on the d? The key has 3 positions. Above the 4 position switch I mentioned is what looks to be an aftermarket kill switch?? The choke is to the left. Appreciate someone telling me the correct settings on everything to start. Thanks in advance.

Get your test light out and turn things on till you have power to the coil..or run a hot wire to the coil,, the switch may be bad...

Sounds like some one cobbled up the wiring to the switch.
The original would have a switch with a lever that one turned to the positions OFF, Ignition,Lights,Bright,Dim
I hate it when I get a tractor or anything else that someone has cobbled up. Most of the time they spend more messing up things than if it was done like original.
If you get a manual it will walk you through the steps you need to do

I'll add to what Harvey stated
L= field lights frt & rear
B= bright frt lights & red light(tail) rear
D= dim frt lights & red light (tail)

You should get power to the coil in any of the switch positions to the right of OFF. If the other is actually a kill switch it will have to be turned to the right as well. As Tim mentioned hooking a test light to the coil is the easiest way.

Does your Model 40 tractor have a 6 volt battery with a generator?

Does your Model 40 tractor have a 12 volt battery with an alternator?
